OpenVMS is legendary for its security and stability, making it an excellent server platform for tasks such as email services, web site hosting and other file-serving applications. However, even though it's immune to all known viruses, it needs to be able to check for the presence of malware in any files or other content which might be accessed by client PCs. On OpenVMS, this functionality is provided by SOPHOS Anti-Virus.

The SOPHOS-supplied VSWEEP command line utility is effective for scanning single files but it needs to start up the SOPHOS Anti-Virus (SAV) engine every time - a very time-consuming process due to the large number of virus definition files (IDEs) which must be loaded. This makes it very inefficient for high-load applications such as email filtering.

Using SOPHAST on your OpenVMS server, you can get significant performance improvements in any application which needs to scan files for viruses - up to 200 times the performance of VSWEEP!

How it works

SOPHAST provides three components which work together with the SOPHOS product to scan files for malware:

  • A server process which runs the SAV engine.
  • A callable software library (API) which communicates with the SOPHAST server.
  • A command-line client which uses the API to request the server to scan files.

The performance improvement comes through the use of the SOPHAST server process. Unlike VSWEEP, it loads the SAV engine once and then is able to instantly respond to requests for file scanning operations.

  • For Alpha: OpenVMS Alpha V7.3-2 and later
  • For Integrity: OpenVMS IA64 V8.2 and later
  • SOPHOS Anti-Virus
  • Optional: VMSclusters

Notes:

  1. OpenVMS VAX is not currently supported.
  2. You must have a valid SOPHOS Anti-Virus licence and up-to-date SOPHOS kit installed on your OpenVMS servers.
