David Malpas, Novus Australia Pty Ltd. The Internet cannot be ignored. It is sweeping through our society and looks set to have a profount impact on business and commerce. Yet most CEOs do not understand the potentiual benefits and threats of the Internet. This presentation discusses different aspects of the Internet from a "big picture" point of view and looks at potential applications in sales and marketing. It will show how others are making use of the technology and explain the impact that the Internet will have on business overall, its direction, performance and its longer term effects. 11:35 "Internet Commerce - Managing the Risks" Kym Teh, EDS Australia Alex Hannell, Bonnins Commercial Lawyers This presentation will highlight a range of the legal risks involved in transacting business through the internet, including contract management, evidentiary proof, civil and certain areas of criminal liability, defamation, and consumer and trade practice law issues. The presenter will outline practical strategies for managing certain legal risks. 12:30 Lunch 13:30 "Third Generation Web Page Design" David Hoskins, State Library oF South Australia Web page design has evolved through three stages: 1st generation: Bland, text-based, academic 2nd generation: Its there so why not use it, the current phase 3rd generation: Planned, utilitarian, professional designed with the purpose of enhancing your organisation's "image". This paper suggests some guidelines which will enable you to create a 3rd generation website. 14:00 "Developing a corporate Web Culture" Dr. Ross Williams, Rocksoft Too often, the reaction of companies first exposed to web technology is to commission a corporate web, place it online, and forget about it. This is like installing a telephone system and then never using it. In this presentation, Dr Ross Williams describes the need for managers, who are serious about the business potential of the web, to accept the web as a platform for change rather than an end in itself, and to build a learning culture that will enable the business to grow with the web instead of being forced to undergo a serious of painful and disruptive revolutions. 15:00 Afternoon Tea/Coffee 15:20 "Choosing an ISP" Bill O'Conner, Access One Any organisation wishing to get connected to the Internet will have to choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who can satisfy their needs. This presentation outlines the issues which need to be considered when choosing an ISP, such as: performance; value for money; services; location; ease of doing business; etc. 16:00 "How do I get connected?" Simon Hackett, Internode Systems Pty Ltd. This presentation discusses and demonstrates the type of equipment you need to physically connect to the Internet. This can vary from dial-up modems for the home or small business user, ISDN, high-speed MANs, through to radio and infra-red connections. Many of these will require at least a router of some sort to go between the computing equipment and the network link, and usually a firewall, too. 17:00 End of Sessions for Day 1 19:00 Dinner (details TBA) Sunday Timetable ---------------- 9:00 "OpenVMS Web Tools" Jeremy Begg, VSM Software Services Pty Ltd. To be really effective, World Wide Web applications (and connectivity to the Internet in general) require a platform which is reliable and secure. This paper demonstrates how OpenVMS running on VAX or Alpha hardware admirably fills this need and presents an overview of the software you need to get an OpenVMS Internet Server up and running. 9:45 "Relying on the Internet" Tim Spurdens, BMC Software This presentation addresses the question of how businesses can rely on their Internet and intranet sites to be available on a 24 X 7 basis. As electronic commerce and reliance on information flowing through the Internet increases, businesses have to be able to provide a reliable availability for their sites, or prospects and customers will go elsewhere. 10:30 Morning Tea/Coffee, sponsored by VSM Software Services Pty Ltd. 10:50 "CGI Scripting" Richard Shape, NS Computer Software and Services Pty Ltd. A lot of people are confused about what CGI scripting is, what Java and JavaScript (or even VBScript) are, and how they might be used, and when. This tutorial will motivate the need to CGI scripting, and then briefly describe and discuss each of the above. Then the bulk of the tutorial will be spent looking in depth at how to write a CGI script, what languages you can use to write them, where they go on the server, how to debug them. It will concentrate on using PERL as the scripting language, but the techniques are more generally applicable. 11:50 "Web Creation for Dogs" Ross Williams, Rocksoft Pty Ltd. As everyone knows, "on the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog". Well dogs need websites too! In this presentation Dr Ross Williams shows how even a drover's dog can create a website using a text editor, an image editor, three flat rocks, and a piece of string. Watch as a complete website is created before your eyes and placed online. This is the ultimate nuts and bolts web creation tutorial. All dogs welcome! 12:50 Closing Remarks Jeremy Begg, DECUS Adelaide LUG Chairman 13:00 BBQ LUNCH ================================================================================ Speakers, in order of appearance -------------------------------- PAUL WHITEWAY Paul Whiteway is Business Development Manager for internet service providers with Digital Equipment.
